Advantage Life Products Inc. To Relaunch and Reformulate CigArrest following FDA Ban on Lobeline Sulfate
Laguna Hills, California – Advantage Life Products Inc., a leading provider of smoking cessation solutions based in Laguna Hills, announces its commitment to relaunch and reformulate CigArrest in response to the recent FDA ban on lobeline sulfate. CigArrest, a popular over-the-counter smoking cessation program, has faced restrictions due to the FDA’s stance on the effectiveness of lobeline sulfate in alleviating smokers’ withdrawal symptoms.
The FDA ban was enacted as the agency cited a lack of convincing scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of lobeline sulfate in assisting individuals with smoking cessation, according to FDA spokesman Michael Schaffer. Consequently, Advantage Life’s Chief Operating Officer, Jim Stapleton, confirmed that the company is no longer receiving revenues tied to CigArrest sales.
Stapleton stated, “We understand the FDA’s concern and are committed to addressing it responsibly. Our team is dedicated to relaunching CigArrest with a reformulated product that adheres to the highest standards and incorporates proven smoking cessation methodologies.”
The controversy surrounding the ban has led some industry experts to speculate that lobbying efforts by large pharmaceutical companies may have played a role in pushing over-the-counter products out of the smoking cessation market. Prescription-based anti-smoking drugs, having undergone the formal FDA approval process, remain unaffected by the ban.
Lobeline sulfate, derived from an herb and used as a respiratory treatment since the early 20th century, was introduced in the 1950s as an anti-smoking drug. Despite its removal from the market, Advantage Life and other stakeholders are exploring alternative compounds to replace lobeline sulfate. The company plans to launch clinical studies to investigate the effectiveness of these alternatives.
John Bancroft, CEO of More Direct Response Inc., the company that introduced CigArrest, criticized the FDA’s action and predicted potential financial setbacks for his company, as well as for Advantage Life and the East Coast company that now owns the rights to the product. Bancroft, who acknowledges the lack of hard evidence supporting lobeline sulfate’s effectiveness, emphasized the importance of the behavior-modification component in CigArrest.
Bancroft stated, “While we understand the concerns raised by the FDA, we believe in the holistic approach of our smoking cessation program. Our commitment to our customers remains unwavering, and we are actively exploring alternative compounds and launching clinical studies to ensure the efficacy of our product.”
